How we score

Last updated: 4 November 2026

Five criteria. One consistent score.

Scores are editorial assessments on a ten-point scale. Each criterion considers the quality and coherence of the game, with the focus of this collection guiding the judgement.

CriterionWeightWhat it covers
Gameplay & control30%The interest and responsiveness of the core decisions and actions.
Structure & discovery20%How progression, exploration and goals fit together.
Art & sound20%The coherence of the visual, musical and narrative presentation.
Clarity & assistance15%How clearly the game explains its rules and offers useful ways to engage.
Depth & return15%The depth of optional goals, alternative approaches and reasons to return.

The calculation.

Multiply each criterion score by its weight, add the results, then round once to one decimal place. The displayed score is calculated from the same five values everywhere on this website.

Hollow Knight: 9.6 × 0.30 + 8.6 × 0.20 + 9.7 × 0.20 + 8.2 × 0.15 + 9.0 × 0.15 = 9.1/10 after rounding.

Read the verdict with the number.

A high score describes a strong fit for the game’s aims. The verdict, strengths and trade-offs explain the judgement; your preferred pace, accessibility needs and interest in the genre determine its fit for you. Length uses Short, Medium, Long or Epic, with open-ended formats identified in the review.

Keeping entries consistent.
